Lhasa - Gyantse - Shigatse - Tingri - Zhangmu -Kathmandu
Day 1: Lhasa B
This would be Day 17 of the main overland programme from Shangri-la to Lhasa. For those continuing to Nepal this would be a free day in Lhasa.
Day 2: Lhasa – Gyantse (290km, 5 hrs) B/L/D
Today depart for Gyantse. We pass by the YamdrokTso (tso means lake) that is over 72 km (45 miles) long. The lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and is fed by numerous small streams. Around 90km to the west of the lake lies the Tibetan town of Gyantse and Lhasa is a 100km to the northeast. According to local mythology, Yamdrok Tso is the transformation of a goddess. On route to Gyantse we visit the Karuola Glacier that is about 71km (about 44 miles) from Gyangtse. Karuola Glacier is about 5,600 meters north of the main peak of Karuola Mountain. In the late afternoon we arrive in Gyantse and visit the Kumbum Pagoda, also called the ‘One Hundred Thousand Buddhas Pagoda’. In addition, you visit Pelkor Monastery with its splendid Buddhist Tibetan art built in the 15th century. Overnight in Gyantse.
Day 3: Gyantse – Shigatse (90km, 1.5 hrs) B/L/D
Drive to Shigatse and visit TashilhunpoMonastery. The main attraction in Shigatse is that this is the seat of the Panchen Lama. Tashilhunpo Monastery was built in 1447 by a nephew of Tsong Khapa. The monastery once housed over 4000 monks, but now there are only 600. Apart from a giant statue of the Maitreya Buddha (nearly 27m high), in the Temple of the Maitreya, the monastery is also famed for its Grand Hall containing the opulent tomb (containing 85kg of gold and masses of jewels) of the fourth Panchen Lama. Day 4: Shigatse – Tingri (300km, 5 hrs) B/L/D
After breakfast, visit Sakya Monastery that is famed as a 'second Dunhuang' due to its colossal collection of numerous Tibetan Buddhist scriptures, murals and thangkas. Then drive to Tingri. Overnight in Tingri
Day 5: Excursion to Mt. Everest Base Camp B/L/D
In the morning drive to the Base Camp of Mt. Everest and visit Rongbu glacier. With an elevation between 5,300m and 6,300m, Rongbu Glacier is one of the greatest glaciers on Mt. Everest. Covering an area of 1,500 square kilometres, it is composed of the West Rongbu Glacier, Middle Rongbu Glacier and the East Rongbu Glacier – in total stretching about 26 kilometres. The thickest ice layer reaches up to about 300 metres, and the width of the ice tongue averages about 1,400 metres. Overnight in Tingri
Day 6: Tingri – Geelong (350km, 5.5 hrs) B/L/D
Drive to Geelong. Farewell dinner will be arranged tonight. Overnight in Zhangmu
Day 7: Zhangmu (Nepal border) - Kathmandu B
Those who have chosen to travel on to Nepal; you will meet your Nepali driver and guide and depart for the next portion of your travels. Zhangmu is the border town for Tibet and Nepal. Those going to Nepal will be transferred through the border and on to Kathmandu and your hotel.
We can make arrangemnets for you to return to Lhasa, or you can continue with the tour to Khatmandu.

After clearing Chinese immigration and walking across to Nepal we meet our Nepalese driver and minibus. Drive to Kathmandu. Balance of day free.
Day 8: Kathmandu - central sightseeing and earthquake recovery (B)
Full day sightseeing tour of Kathmandu, Patan and Baudha. In Kathmandu Major central sights will be covered and in particular we will be looking at the earthquake recovery. (BB).
Day 9: Sightseeing ouside and around Kathmandu (B)
Full day sightseeing tour of the ancient town of Bhaktapur, the Surya Binayak temple and Changu Narayan. (BB)
Day10: Free dayKathmandu (B)
Free day. (BB).
Day11: Depart Kathmandu or continue with other plans B
Transfer to airport for your departure of continue with individual programmes.
